“When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? Consult God’s instruction and the testimony of warning. If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn.” Isaiah 8:19-20 (NIV)
There is a sad story in the Old Testament about such a situation. King Saul wants to know God’s will. He is faced with battling the mighty Philistine army and is afraid for the outcome. He goes to the high priest first to inquire of God, but God, does not answer. So he seeks out a medium and begs her to call up the prophet Samuel from the dead. She is reluctant, since all spiritualists have been driven from the land and forbade from practicing divination. But finally she relents. Samuel appears and not only gives Saul the will of God, but a heartbreaking reprimand (because of the wrong way he is going about finding God’s will). Saul’s army will not only lose to the Philistines, but Saul and his sons will lose their lives.
The law and the covenant is the Word of God. The answers for our lives are in the Bible. Jesus encourages us “Seek and you will find ” (Matthew 7:7). Mediums and fortune tellers don’t have God’s voice. The Bible warns against them. God’s will for our lives is in God’s Word and it is good, anywhere, any time.
